It's Hailing in New Mexico

Howdy All.

Today's journey via bicycle took us from Zuni, NM to Gallup, NM, a ride of only 70km! This leg of the trip is what Al has called our Native American portion of the tour, as each of the towns we stay in this week are populated mostly by Aboriginals. Last night in Zuni we were treated to some singing, jewelry making, and tours by the towns people who were more than friendly and very excited to see us there.

We stayed at the brand-spankin' new Reformed Christian Mission of Zuni, which, as you can read below, was started years ago by Christian Reformed Missionaries.

We were treated that night with not only indoor accommodations, but also separate rooms for the groups, so we were able to separate snorers and non-snorers. Plus, the next day's schedule was moved back an hour since we had a short ride - what a treat. I heard threats of slashing bike tires for early alarms or snoring, but it happened anyways. Such is life when you share a room with 30 people.

We were also given a first here - dinner indoors with some cultural entertainment.

Since it was independence day, we sang the star spangled banner and some other song... America the beautiful? Most Canadians were at a loss without sheet music for the latter.

This morning, day 12, was leisurely. We got up late, ate late, and started slow. Since we only had 70km to go, we took our time which was nice. It wasn't a race to beat the heat. Once we got into Gallup, the town closest to the Rehoboth school where we are staying, we found a little Café. Cheese-cake and lattes were in order to celebrate the short ride, and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Now, we're at Rehoboth Christian School, enjoying the facilities.

Currently it is raining, and some of the more adventurous riders decided to take advantage of the natural shower/hail storm. Why waste water when it's readily available outside??

Stay tuned for tomorrow's update on the 160km ride into Shiprock, NM!
